Roads across Barnsley have been closed and flood warnings issued due to the downpours. And residents at Darton are busy filling sandbags to protect their homes in case the River Dearne breaks its banks. Chronicle photographer Scott Bairstow has been posting pictures on his Twitter account @ScottBairstow. Forecasters predicted a month's rain would fall in 24 hours. It is not yet known if that is the case but the deluge has caused chaos. Across Barnsley the following roads have been forced to close: Bradberry Balk Lane, Wombwell; Bank Road, Thurgoland; Claycliffe Raod, Barugh Green; High Street, Grimethorpe; Gilroyd Lane, Gilroyd; Green Lane, Penistone; Green Road/Benbank Road, Dodworth; Smithy Bridge Lane, ; A628 at Silkstone; Station Road, Wombwell; High Street, Worsbrough; Bower Hill, Oxspring. Police have urged motorists to take care and to obey road closure signs. Flood warnings are in place on the River Don at Hoyle Mill Lane, Thurlstone and part of the A628 in Penistone; River Dearne at Darton and Barugh; River Dove from Aldham Bridge to Low Valley including Wombwell Ings Caravan Site.

We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
