FAMILY and friends of a local tree surgeon killed as he worked in a Barnsley churchyard are hoping to raise more than £10,000 with a fundraising cycle ride in his memory.

Later this month 40 friends of Martin Hanks will tackle a 200-mile ride to Scarborough and back, raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a trust fund for his two young children.

The 34-year-old from Thurstonland died in April when removing branches from a tree in the churchyard at the former All Hallows church in High Hoyland.

Martin had been working with two colleagues when he was hit by a branch and died instantly, leaving behind a wife, Emma, four-year-old Lucca and one-year-old Esme.

The ride is taking place on September 19 and 20.

Donations can be made online by going to the two separate fund-raising pages. To donate to Lucca and Esme's Trust Fund go here while donations to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance can be made here.
