TWO former Barnsley Holgate Grammar School pupils are working together to stage a reunion despite a 3,000-mile gap between their homes.

Melvyn Lunn and Rod Senior are trying to trace the 160-strong 1960 intake at the Shaw Lane school.

Melvyn, a Darton-based chartered accountant, and Rod, a businessman in Fort Myers, Florida, hatched the plan during a get-together at Barugh Green’s Crown and Anchor public house during a recent return visit by Rod.

“We decided to meet following a linkup via the Friends Reunited website,” said Melvyn. “We got on so well that we were soon discussing the possibility of organising a reunion event.

“Quite a few of our former friends can be contacted via Friends Reunited but others may be more difficult to trace and we hope the Chronicle will help.

“So far we haven't made definite arrangements for the reunion but we are probably looking at a date in September. That will be 40 years since Rod and I completed our education at Holgate, 42 years in the case of those who did not stay on for A-levels and 47 years since we and around 160 others arrived there as first years.”

Melvyn is inviting 1960-intake pupils, or people with knowledge of them, to contact him at melvynlunn@accountant.com or by telephone on Barnsley 390220.
