A FORMER job centre which closed earlier this year is to be converted to bedsits if plans submitted to Barnsley Council are approved.

Roger Beecroft has applied for planning permission for change of use of the former Job Centre Plus on High Street, Goldthorpe to a 15-bedroom house of multiple occupation (HMO).

It was one of 78 identified by the government for closure last year, with people directed to Mexborough instead.

The closure was branded ‘disgraceful’ by Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey who had urged the government to keep it open because the rate of long-term illness or disability in the Dearne is three times the national average and unemployment is double.

A decision is expected to be made by July 17 and comments can be made until June 21.
