Barnsley dumped Scunthorpe out of another cup competition with a 2-1 win at Glanford Park.

After beating the Iron on penalties in the Capital One Cup last month, The Reds got by Scunny in normal time in the opening round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to second half goals from Lewin Nyatanga and Marley Watkins.

Nick Townsend, who signed on a permanent deal earlier in the afternoon from Birmingham City, started in goal but Lee Johnson did not name a goalkeeper on the allotted five man bench.

Scott Wiseman started for Scunthorpe who launched the first attack with Hakeeb Adelakun testing Townsend.

Barnsley had their first chance on 27 minutes and it should have been taken by Watkins.

He intercepted Sean McAllister's backpass and rounded Luke Daniels in the Scunny goal. With the seemingly easy task of tapping in, Watkins took his time and by the time he'd sorted his feet out, Daniels had recovered and smothered his effort.

The home side then shot wide twice through Scott Laird and Tom Hopper.

It was the first delivery of real quality which brought the opening goal on 62 minutes.

George Smith, on the right hand side following a corner, fired in an inswinger which Nyatanga helped divert beyond Daniels.

Scunthorpe threw on attacking options Gary McSheffrey, Paddy Madden and Kevin van Even in a bid to get back into the game.

The next chance fell to Barnsley though and it took a terrific save from Daniels to claw out Sam Winnall's effort from the edge of the box.

Nyatanga was in action at the other end and cleared a dangerous looking cross from McSheffrey away from danger.Barnsley made their progression secure with 76 gone.

Watkins drove in from the right and his initial effort rebounded kindly to him to poke under Daniels.

Dutch striker van Veen then headed wide but Scunthorpe struck a late consolation through Charlie Goode who capitalised on Townsend spilling a cross.
