BARNSLEY schools risk losing more than £6m in funding according to teaching unions warning of massive cuts under a planned school funding shake-up by government.

Reforms to school funding for 2018/19 were set out by Education Secretary Justine Greening last month. The new national funding formula proposal is designed to create a level playing field for schools in different parts of the country with similar intakes, who receive different budgets per pupil.

Barnsley looked set to be one of the winners, receiving almost £12m extra to spend on education, but teaching unions this week said research shows the new formula would actually leave schools with less money for every pupil.

The stark warning comes after unions analysed funding data for each school published by the Department for Education as part of its proposals for a national funding formula to calculate how much schools will receive in 2019/20, taking into account things such as inflation and cost increases imposed on schools.
