A SECOND World War veteran celebrated his 100th birthday this week.

Ronald Henry Dickinson celebrated the century on Tuesday with family and friends at his home on Upper Sheffield Road.

Ronald was born just before the end of the First World War on June 12 1918 to Herbert and Ethel Dickinson, and was the eldest of three children.

He married Hilda Whalley on August 10 1942 during the Second World War when he was in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He had three sons with Hilda before her death in 1998 after 57 years of marriage, and one granddaughter.

Ronald started working at the age of 14 at Woods glassworks. He took a six year break from the role during the war but returned until it closed in 1980. Afterwards, he worked at Morton’s fish and chip shop and the Co-Op warehouse.

He is still active and engaged with the community as he is the honorary president of the White Rose Organ Society.

Ronald’s card from the Queen arrived by special delivery on the morning of the big day.
