A WEEKLY social club is proving so successful membership has rocketed by 700 per cent. Katia Harston paid a visit.

AS I pull into the car park at Gilroyd Social Club, the first thing I notice is the lively beat of music coming from the club - and laughter. Lots of it.

But it’s not Saturday night in clubland, it is a Wednesday afternoon in Gilroyd and the hubbub is coming from members of the Young at Heart group, which meets weekly at the Saville Road club.

More than 90 have turned out to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and members - aged between 40 and 90 - are decked out in their finest Royal-themed attire and the club is awash with red, white and blue.

The atmosphere is electric, there is a constant hum of chatter and everyone is in high spirits but I’m told that is quite the norm for the Young at Heart gang, who lay claim to possibly Barnsley’s jolliest senior citizens’ social club on the circuit.
