Ryan Kent admits Barnsley fans did not see the best of him in the first half of the season but is now hoping to build on his good current run of form.

The 20-year-old winger has impressed in recent weeks, scoring in the victory over Leeds United and assisting Adam Armstrong's winner at Rotherham. The Liverpool loanee has made 27 Championship starts for the Reds this season, more than any other outfield player. Those games have brought two goals and one assist.

Kent told the Chronicle: "Being a young player in my first Championship season, it is going to be hard.  My performances earlier in the season didn't show what I can do.  But, in the past few weeks, I have added goals and assists to my game and I am showing more of what I am capable of.

"To play a part in the wins against Leeds and Rotherham was a massive confidence boost for me.  I am playing an important role defensively in the team as well, but I need to score and create goals when I go forward."

He added: "My performances in the middle of the season weren't what I wanted and something needed to change. I have relaxed a bit and that is working for me."

Kent has played one cup tie for Liverpool but has spent the last two seasons on loan at League One Coventry City and now Championship Barnsley.

"I want to get to the top level," said the England under 20 international.

"My plan is to break into Liverpool's first team, but I don't know if it's in Jurgen Klopp's mind.  I am in regular touch with people at Liverpool. They are really pleased with my progress so far. "Barnsley and Liverpool play a similar, explosive style.

"Barnsley have helped me become a Championship footballer. Paul Heckingbottom (Reds head coach) is a good man, he's honest with everybody and reasonable with everybody."
