BARNSLEY’S oldest music shop Jax Music Centres is to close for good at the end of the month after 50 years in the town centre.
Jax, on Pitt Street has been in Barnsley since 1967, but owner and founder Jack Milthorpe has been putting his own money into the business in recent years just to try and keep his one long-serving employee in employment.
But this week he told the Chronicle factors including increased rent, tough sales quotas from suppliers, and increasing competition online had forced him to call it a day.
“We told people on Saturday and the word ‘sad’ is all I keep hearing,” said Jack. “And it is very sad, 50 years is a very long time.”
