POLICE have revealed they will not launch the ‘improved’ 101 non-emergency phone line until they are confident teething problems have been ironed out.

The new system, which cost the police more than £12m, was supposed to be introduced in March but that was put back to June and then the launch was cancelled.

A police spokesperson said: “Discussions are ongoing with Sopra Steria to establish a date that is achievable and that is suitable for the business as a whole.

“We appreciate the delay in launching the system is frustrating and disappointing, however the safety of the public and our colleagues is our paramount priority, and we cannot launch the system until we are fully confident that all aspects of its functionality are working correctly.”
