A LIFESAVER who has worked with distinction in Barnsley has had to stand down from his role with St John Ambulance.

District manager Andy Feely has been diagnosed with eye cancer and is awaiting further consultation.

One of his major involvements has been with the Oakwell (Barnsley) unit of SJA and he is well known for his work with young cadets.

Advanced first aider with the Oakwell unit, Chris Hogg, paid tribute to Andy’s work.

“He’s a member of the Order of St John and is noted for his voluntary work with Reds in the Community, but is having to stand down due to the eye cancer,” he said.

Andy was diagnosed after being hit by a football in the face during a ‘Fit Reds’ training session at Oakwell. On visiting his optician for the replacement of his broken glasses, they noticed abnormal findings in his eye.

Since then he has undergone radiotherapy. Sadly, said Chris, the cancer has spread to other parts of Andy’s body and he is awaiting further consultation for this aggressive form of cancer.

Andy has been a member of St John Ambulance since 1975 and has had many roles in the organisation including being head of ambulance operations for the north region for the past few years.

Ambulance operations support the NHS every day of the year and Andy has been integral to St John ambulances being on the roads responding to 999 calls and supporting local hospitals.

“Part of Andy’s role as district manager is to support a large number of cadet units and ensure the next generation of lifesavers are inspired to volunteer for St John Ambulance and pursue healthcare professional careers,” said Chris.

“Andy has always taken a keen interest in the safety of spectators at Oakwell Stadium as a member of the safety advisory group and visits frequently to be part of the frontline team who care for those unwell at fixtures.

“He has also been part of the ‘Reds in the Community’ group for a number of years and has supported their charitable efforts.

“Andy has lived in Barnsley his whole life and has served the community with distinction.”
