A BEER festival, organised by residents of Mapplewell, will help raise the funds for Christmas lights to be fitted in the village.

The Mapplewell Beer Festival has been organised by the Mapplewell Greenspace Group and residents from the village. The group organised the festival to help raise the £18,000 needed to purchase Christmas lights to go through the centre of the village.

“We want to install 30 lights in the village,” said festival organiser and owner of The Talbot and Wentworth pubs, David Lockwood. “The lights would cost a total of £18,000 but they need ordering by July so we are on a bit of a tight deadline. We are planning more events to raise the money as well.”

The festival will be held in Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall and will feature cask and craft ale, real cider and a gin bar. Local businesses can also sponsor a barrel of beer which will be sold at the festival, with all profits going towards the Christmas lights.

“We have been working with lots of breweries to source beer from local breweries,” said David. “Most of the barrels are already sponsored but we are still on the look out for more local businesses to sponsor a barrel to be a part of the festival. We do have plans to make the beer festival a bigger event in the years to come but for now we are starting off smaller and working our way up.

“I think this is a positive thing and hopefully we will make a major improvement to the village at Christmas time.”

The Beer Festival will take place from May 31 to June 2 in Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall. Entry is free but the event is for over 18s only.
