IT was created in 1795 and is considered one of the most important pieces of industrial heritage in the world and now the Newcomen Beam Engine is working again.
A three-year £500,000 project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund has now been completed.
Installed by Earl Fitzwilliam to stop Elsecar’s rapidly expanding collieries from flooding, the engine is the last example of its type still in its original position anywhere isn the world. From 1795 to 1923, it is estimated to have pumped more than 40,000 million litres of water from underground.
