Barnsley FC have confirmed they have made a 'formal complaint' to both both the EFL and Football Association following the alleged assault by Joey Barton on Daniel Stendel on Saturday.

Reds head coach Stendel was left with damage to his face and teeth after an incident in the tunnel area, while Fleetwood Town manager Barton was prevented from leaving the ground by police who then interviewed him and let him leave.

South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident and are expected to speak with Barton again this week in a voluntary interview. Stendel has recovered enough to attend training this week.

Barnsley added in a statement: "Barnsley Football Club can confirm that it has lodged a formal complaint to both the English Football League and the Football Association. This is following an alleged incident at the conclusion of the match on Saturday 13th April, between Joey Barton and Daniel Stendel. The Club is also currently working with the police and assisting with all enquiries regarding the incident. No further comment will be issued whilst police investigations are ongoing."
