A PROJECT to reduce smoking in Barnsley has continued to see success after latest figures revealed another downward trend has been achieved.
There are now 17.4 people classed as smokers in the town, down 0.8 per cent on last year, which in turn was down by about two per cent on the previous year’s figures.
A council-led scheme - dubbed Breathe 2025 - is aiming to create a smoke-free town which has already seen schools and Barnsley Hospital become no-smoking zones, as well as many public places in the town centre.
A council spokesman said: “Around 17.4 per cent of adults smoke in Barnsley - this reduction is bigger than the national and Yorkshire and Humber average.
“We continue to work towards ‘Breathe 2025’, in which the next generation of children are raised free from tobacco where smoking is rarely seen.”
