CONSTRUCTION firm Southdale is set to create opportunities for apprentices after landing work valued at more than £20 million.

Southdale has secured work in Barnsley, Doncaster, Ilkley, Sheffield and York, and want to create one apprenticeship for every million pounds-worth of work they have won.

These six lucrative contracts will also benefit subcontractors and supply chain companies by putting almost £22 million into the Yorkshire economy.

New contracts include a £2.2m development for Leeds and Yorkshire Housing Association in Athersley and the creation of 37 houses for Barnsley Council at Roy Kilner Road, valued at £3.9m.

Trudie McCormick, Yorkshire region managing director at Southdale, said: "Southdale’s robust and continued growth in Yorkshire is clearly demonstrated by these new contract wins. We’re committed to helping the economy in communities in which we are based so the overwhelming majority of this work will go directly into the Yorkshire supply chain.

"We are also aiming to recruit one apprentice for every million pounds-worth of work that we’ve won, to invest in the next generation of construction professionals. These contract wins represent a continued strong growth throughout 2014 and we are looking forward to an excellent year as we continue to develop our presence in Yorkshire and Humberside."
