CHILDREN'S television presenter Sam Nixon was special guest at the Christmas celebration for Age UK Barnsley volunteers.

He attended the event on Tuesday at Horizon Community College with about 80 volunteers - who help out with everything from updating the website and working in charity shops, to visiting lonely and isolated people.

Pauline Kimantas, chief executive officer of Age UK Barnsley, said: "Sam has a connection with Age UK Barnsley, as his grandmother Mary Hague used one of our day centres.

"She passed away earlier this year and this was his way of saying thank for the support shown to his grandmother."
