DEVELOPMENT giant Peel Environmental says it is 'taking stock' over whether to appeal against refusal for its £80 million waste plant plans.

The controversial proposals to build a plant between near Little Houghton were thrown out by Barnsley Council in November after councillors sided with hundreds of objectors from Cudworth, Darfield, Great Houghton, Little Houghton and Middlecliffe, and voted unanimously against Peel's plans.

The developer intended to build a renewable energy park to generate enough electricity for 55,000 homes using up to 60,000 tonnes of food waste and 150,000 tonnes of waste timber, at the former Houghton Colliery site off Park Spring Road.

A spokesman for Peel Environmental said: "We're taking stock of the council's decision and considering the next steps."
