BARNSLEY councillors were paid more than £900,000 last year but the figure is virtually unchanged from a year ago.

There are 63 council seats, and collectively they were paid £911,608.12 in the year to March 31.

This includes the unchanged basic allowance paid to all councillors of £10,426 - effectively a salary - as well as special responsibility pay for additional duties such as cabinet members and chairmen of committees, and mileage and travel expenses.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton was paid the most, a total of £35,848.23 including just over £300 in travel expenses for the year, followed by his deputy leader Jim Andrews at £26,999 including just over £200 in mileage allowance.

Eight councillors didn't claim anything above the basic £10,426. These were Sharron Brook, Jack Carr, Alice Cave, Phil Davies, Lesley Duerden, Steve Green, Dorothy Higginbottom and Brian Perrin.
