THE environment secretary has hailed a Barnsley cake factory as a shining example of what Britain's food industry should be doing.

Elizabeth Truss officially opened a new £20m production line at the Premier Foods bakery at Carlton, formerly known as Manor Bakery. She welcomed major investment in technology alongside, a growing workforce and a commitment to recruiting apprentices.

The new production line - one of the biggest in Europe - can make up to 300 million Mr Kipling Snack Pack cakes every year and has created 80 new jobs - the site already employs 750.

Premier Foods includes brands such as Oxo, Bisto, Batchelors, Lloyd Grossman and Sharwoods with annual group revenue nearing £1.3bn.
