THE COST of treating older people who fall and break bones in Barnsley will rise by more than £17m over the next 15 years.

The number of people deemed to be at high-risk of suffering a fall is estimated to rise to 63,784 by 2020, up from 56,724 last year according to government statistics - most of them elderly.

That in turn would put more pressure on care homes with a 24 per cent increase in admissions as a direct result of older people falling.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, has led to a strategy to deal with falls prevention in Barnsley, which aims to prevent falls in elderly people and associated fractures, and also a fall in the number attending A and E, being drawn up.
