BARNSLEY Hospital is expected to end this financial year with a deficit of £10.1m - which is £3.5m more than last year.

Michael Wright, the hospital’s finance director, said this was because the hospital’s income from the government for treating patients had been reduced in certain areas, and because insurance premiums had increased.

The hospital’s financial worries came about in March 2014 when a whistle blower discovered a £2.3m black hole in the accounts which later grew to £12m.

The hospital was found in breach of licence by hospital regulators and put into place a robust recovery plan.

It ended the last financial year with a deficit of £6.6m. This included a £1.3m bonus payment from regulator NHS Improvement, which the hospital received because the deficit was £200,000 less than expected.
