Daniel Stendel would be ‘very surprised’ if he received a touchline ban for being sent off at Shrewsbury Town.

The Barnsley head coach was shown a red card when he left his technical area to argue with Shrews players after claiming Oliver Norburn made too much of a tackle by Alex Mowatt in front of the dugouts. Coach Chris Stern leapt from the bench to join in the altercation and received his second yellow card of the season following a similar incident at Fleetwood Town last month. A Shrews coach was also booked.

While Stern will need another two yellow cards to receive a touchline ban, Stendel could get one for Tuesday’s incident but Barnsley have made a case against that to the authorities and have sent the footage off to be examined. Stendel told the Chronicle: “I would be very surprised if I got a suspension.”

He added: “The staff members from Shrewsbury were on our side. It wasn’t the best decision by the referee and he hasn’t explained why he sent me off. Football is a game of emotions and I am not the type to stand still but I think it’s normal behaviour and I don’t need to change it.

“It’s my personality. I want to show emotions and I want my players to show emotions. I wanted to play football in the second half and the fans wanted to see a football match. I understand Shrewsbury wanted to keep their lead but they were time-wasting so much it was crazy.”
