Barnsley's health budget will increase by £13.2m over the next two years, despite initial fears of a £40m cut.

Figures published by NHS England show the Clinical Commissioning Group, which commissions health services in the town, will receive an extra 2.14 per cent - taking the budget from £339.7m to £347m in 2014/15. For 2015/16, the figure rises to £352.9m.

Because of changes to the key health funding formula, it was thought Barnsley could lose as much as 13.5 per cent of its budget, worth £41m.

The decision to adopt a new formula for health commissioners was made by the NHS England Board, which felt it would ensure that funding matched the needs of local people.

It means all CCGs will receive a funding increase matching inflation in the next two years with the most underfunded areas and those with fast-growing populations receiving even more.
