RESIDENTS so fed up with people using their quiet residential side street as a car park have resorted to putting up their own signs warning cars will be clamped.

Wellfield Road, off Gawber Road, is an unadopted road meaning it is owned by the residents and not under Barnsley Council's control.

Drivers parking there when using the hospital, town centre, or nearby Barnsley Recovery College (formerly the Moorland Centre) have been driving residents mad for years.

"Parking has just been getting out of control, and it was becoming dangerous," said resident Mark Illingworth. "People can't see to pull out of the junction, and fire engines and ambulances wouldn't be able to get in.

"A few residents talked about it and we decided to invest a small amount of money on some signs. We asked all the residents if they were happy with what we were doing and nobody objected."

The signs went up almost two weeks ago and since then people seem to have stopped parking there.

"It's certainly had a big impact," said Mark. "The main issue is, we wanted to emphasise the fact that Wellfield Road is a private road. The kerb is getting damaged by people bouncing cars up and down - we have to pay for that and I don't think people realise.

"We've put notices on people's cars to point it out, because not everyone notices a new sign, and we've only had one repeat offender who's come back after getting a notice."

Barnsley Council confirmed it is a private road, and legislation does allow the residents to fine people who park there without permission.
