BARNSLEY parents are being urged to give their consent to have their children's teeth checked as part of a national survey.

The survey is being carried out as a joint initiative between Barnsley Council, Barnsley Community Dental Service, Public Health England and local primary schools.

Children aged five will have a simple check at school by a dentist.

Coun Jim Andrews, cabinet spokesman for public health, said: "Children will be bringing consent letters home for parents and carers to sign. Improving children's teeth and reducing the number of children with tooth decay is an important public health priority for the council. Our children have one of the highest numbers of decayed, missing and filled teeth in the country which is not acceptable."
