POLICE have warned people attending a demonstration in Barnsley town centre on Saturday to behave or face the consequences.

Hundreds of people are expected to gather at the town hall at 1pm calling for improved safety in the town centre following the serious sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in the Alhambra underpass earlier this month.

Organiser Dale Kelk said: "The people of Barnsley feel the town is getting out of control and the town centre and immediate areas surrounding it are no longer safe."

A police spokesman said: "The force respects an individual's democratic right to protest and officers will be on duty to ensure a peaceful and safe protest for those involved, as well as the wider community of Barnsley."
