COUNCIL chiefs are looking at a novel idea to fill up empty shops on Goldthorpe town centre in an attempt to boost trade.

A number of shops on the street are vacant with the major ones being the former Yorkshire Bank, Job Lot supermarket, Co-op and Halifax on Doncaster Road.

Now surveyors for the council’s asset management department are looking into seeing whether the vacant units can be taken over on ‘temporary meanwhile purposes’ for community benefit.

Coun Ralph Sixsmith sees the idea as a positive one and says it could see community groups take over some of the units to fill up the high street.
