BARNSLEY Council leader Sir Steve Houghton has urged the town’s area councils to continue employing an enforcement agency to stop litterbugs, dog fouling and illegal parking.

Kingdom, the firm employed by several of Barnsley’s six area councils, will find out if its services are being retained early next year.

Coun Houghton, who represents the Cudworth ward, sits on the North East Area Council whose own contract with Kingdom is due to end in March 2019.

In the coming months, councillors Joe Hayward, Jeff Ennis, Steve Green and Caroline Makinson - the working party for the area council - will decide whether or not the contract will be extended.

Coun Houghton said: “Ourselves and others need to keep this service on, otherwise it gives those responsible for littering, dog fouling and illegal parking a green light to do as they please.

“It especially is the case with parking - it’ll become a free for all and there has to be sanctions. The service’s value-for-money aspect will be looked at, but often the revenue generated goes down because it’s successful, not the other way round.”
