Thousands of Christmas trees in Silkstone have shot up in size - thanks to the recent wet weather.

Trees at Horsfield's Plant Nursery, off Barnsley Road, are 50 per cent bigger than expected at this time of year following the summer downpours.

Staff at the centre planted 2,500 trees in March and owner Emma Horsfield said the growth of the trees was 'fabulous'.

"They've grown by more than 50 per cent and are fatter and bushier," said Emma.

She added: "The wet weather is not very good for the customers but it is good for the trees."

Trees at the centre range from five ft to 40 ft, with the traditional Picea Abis Excelsa, also known as the Norway Spruce, and the low needle drop Nordmann Fir available.

A six ft tree can take between eight and ten years to grow with the 40 ft trees about 30 years old.
