A CAMPAIGN launched by Barnsley Council to encourage women to be screened for cervical cancer has won a national award.

The Fear or Smear campaign was developed to increase take up of cervical screening in women aged 25 to 29 after statistics showed almost 29 per cent of that age group in Barnsley failed to attend a screening when invited.

It is the winner of the national Cervical Screening Awards run by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust.

The campaign is aimed to dispel the myths and false perceptions surrounding the test such as fear of pain, embarrassment and the misunderstanding that it is a test for cancer.

It was commissioned by Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group - which commissions the town's health services - and involved creating a website, adverts and posters which were given out to health care professionals and health care outlets.
