HEALTH services for children and young people in Barnsley have been thrown into disarray because the only provider wants to cancel its contract with Barnsley Council.

Barnsley Council became responsible for the health and wellbeing of children and young people in October in the final phase of the transfer of public health responsibilities from the NHS.

It had previously announced plans to bring school nursing, health visiting and the family nurse partnership together in one service called the 0-19 Healthy Child Programme. The programme was due to start in June, with a £1m reduction in its budget.

The services are currently delivered by health care provider South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SYWFT), which now wants to exit its contract.
