A TOWN centre crackdown on motorists flouting laws has been hailed a success by police.

The event, which took place last Thursday, was part of Operation Equinox and saw officers set up a base on West Way before flagging down passing vehicles to conduct random checks.

Although the scheme only went on for several hours, ten motorists were stopped for having illegal tyres, defective registration plates and for failing to wear seatbelts, while a Ford Focus was seized for having no insurance.

PC Ross Greenwood said: “It was a good result and although the ten offences stand out, a lot of advice was also handed out to motorists to prevent incidents occurring in the future.

“Vehicles are owners’ responsibility and they should be checking to see if there are any defects.”

The town centre’s last vehicle action day comes after more than 20 taxis were stopped as part of February’s Operation Duxford, which resulted in six licences being suspended due to vehicles having defective tyres.

And more will be carried out in the coming months as police officers aim to rid vehicle crime from Barnsley’s streets.

“Operation Equinox was a big engagement event for us, also run in conjunction with fire crews,” PC Greenwood said. “There’s been issues recently in the town centre in particular so it was decided to have more officers there to offer advice, something which will continue.”
