MORE than 150 soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment will march through Barnsley in all their uniformed glory next week for a Freedom Parade.

They will be given a warm Barnsley welcome on Wednesday as the regiment exercises its right to the Freedom of the Borough and marched through the town centre in full parade uniform with bayonets fixed, band playing and colours flying.

Barnsley was initially linked to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment which has now been amalgamated into the Yorkshire Regiment. This year it celebrates its 300th birthday.

The parade will depart from the Churchfield car park at 10.45am reaching the town hall at 11am where it will halt and stand to attention for the inspection and speeches by the mayor and commanding officer, before the parade is given permission to march through the town centre.The soldiers will march down Market Hill, on to Queen Street, Cheapside, New Street.

It will then about-turn and come back via New Street Cheapside, Eldon Street, Market Hill, Church Street before turning left on Sadler Gate and arriving back at the town hall.
